I didn't notice this trend in books until more than halfway through the book I'm currently reading, For One More Day by Mitch Albom.
It's an extremely quick and easy read. I'm enjoying it, and I'll be finished within the hour.
Prior to this, I read The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards.
It was very slow at times, but overall a good book.
Before that? Chuck Palahniuk's Survivor.
These are all very depressing books.
Help me.
What I'd *really* like is a book recommendation or two. I need happy, light reading in my life right now. Especially now. Give me optimism. Hope. Happiness. Love. All of that junk. Then I can return to my bookshelf of all the random books I haven't yet read that were sitting in my house in PA, all of which appear to follow the same genre.

I don't know if you've ever read Maureen Johnson, but 13 Little Blue Envelopes and Girl at Sea are really fun, summer reads.

"The Flying Troutmans" by Miriam Toews is a great read. It involves a roadtrip, quirky kids, and only a tiny bit of sadness.
The Inkheart series by Cornela Flunke and anything by Maureen Johnson. :)
Anything by Maureen Johnson, and I really like Bill Bryson books just now, especially The Life and Times of Thunderbolt Kid which is his autobiography, and Notes From a Small Island, which I'm reading now. If it's your kind of humor, you'll love him. :] <3
I like sarah dessen. Sarah dessen books are always good. Not exactly happy and light hearted but the uglies trilogy by scotr westerfeld is really neat. You should totaly read it. Aimee friendman books are good books if you just want some random book to read and go on an adventure girly cute books i don't know. They're pretty cool. :D
You should read David Sedaris. He's excellent. You wouldn't think essays would be so entertaining, but they definitely are when he writes them.
Most of the books I would normally recommend have probably already been read by you. I guess I could recommend You Don' Know Me by David Klass. It's not exactly happy though. Just really funny at times.
Where to even start, Sam, so many possibilities. If you don't need it to be a novel and need a good laugh, it would be tough to beat David Sedaris Me Talk Pretty One day. I had to stop reading it in public because I laughed so much so loud that it was getting me a lot of strange looks. (More than usual, that is.) And I'm a big fan of a book by Justine Larbalestier called How To Ditch Your Fairy. Good times.
I've just started reading The Magicians by Lev Grossman. The back of it is covered with comparisons to Harry Potter and Chronicles of Narnia, but please disregard that. Haha. It does have a relatively similar theme, but it is a lot darker and quite different. I really recommend reading it yet. I can't guarantee no one dies in it though, as I have yet to finish it. Haha.
